Album Review: NBA Youngboy - Top
Louisiana Native Youngboy Never Broke Again has released his 21 Track album “Top”. “Top” features both Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg as the only features on the full-length project.
Youngboy starts off this album as he tends to execute with most of his songs, talking about his come up and how he has escaped his past life while flexing everything he has gained in the process while still fighting his demons. His opening track “Drug Addiction” gives us an emotional start to the project where Youngboy is showing us his demons with his trademark melodic voice. “Drug Addiction” is a decent opening track for the project but the next few tracks don’t tend to offer anything different from each other where most of the subjects seem to get pretty repetitive along with the songs flowing into each other.
Youngboy seems to approach his album as if he has something to prove to the audience, Youngboy is quite vulnerable to being hated on and criticized online which is why I think he has tried to attack this full project on his own besides from his two features because he feels he doesn’t need anyone else's input. Credit where credit is due though, Youngboy doesn’t let himself get overlapped by either Snoop Dogg or Lil Wayne on both their tracks, which makes me think that maybe putting Youngboy up alongside two huge names has actually brought out the best in him.
Youngboy has definitely increased his overall production on “Top” compared to his old projects which definitely shows growth for the young rapper, “Top” wasn't a bad project but it was definitely missing that little spark that we know Youngboy can light, I think “Top” was definitely missing those hype tracks that Youngboy can do best. It will be interesting to see what Youngboy pulls out next.
