As the talk around Tekashi 6ix9ine continues to grip the internet, his latest single ‘GOOBA’ is showing no signs of stopping.

The controversial rapper’s new single was released on Friday and immediately broke YouTube’s record for the most number of views in the first 24 hour period for a Hip-Hop upload (43 million). Two days ago, the colourful video also surpassed Taylor Swift’s ‘ME!’ and Ariana Grande’s ‘thank u, next’ as the fastest video to reach 100 million views on the platform by an American artist. At the time of publishing this article, it’s clocking at a whopping 137 million views.

Now it looks like it will make a huge dent on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as well. According to current projections, the song is expected to debut straight at number 1 on next week’s chart, ahead of Doja Cat & Nicki Minaj’s ‘Say So‘, Ariana Grande & Justin Bieber’s ‘Stuck with u’ and others. Whether it will be able to hold traction over the week remains to be seen. It will be another testament to the fact that controversy sells more often than not.

‘GOOBA’ has already debuted at #1 of Rolling Stone’s “Top 100 Songs” chart and is currently the third most streamed song on both global and U.S. Spotify. On US Apple Music chart, it has dropped to #2 after occupying the top spot for the last few days.

Tekashi 6ix9ine, born Daniel Hernandez, has been labelled as a “snitch” who ratted out his crew, the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. He was released early from jail after Coronavirus scare in April following a reduced two-year sentence in his much publicized racketeering and firearms case.
