Bay Dreams 2022
Festival favourite ‘Bay Dreams’ is back with a fresh look and a new purpose. Returning to summer hotspots The Mount and Nelson, Bay Dreams 2022 will feature a diverse lineup of extraordinary international and local talent. Set to be one of the hottest festivals of the summer, Bay Dreams is a must-do for all music lovers.
Bay Dreams 2022 will be held at TrustPower Bay Park at The Mount on January 3 and at Trafalgar Park in Nelson on January 5.
The festival welcomes powerhouse Tash Sultana, and chart-topping Tones and I to the big stage. Other big names featuring on the 2022 line-up include Chase & Status, Netsky, ONEFOUR, Masked Wolf, and Hybrid Minds presents Outline (featuring Charlotte Haining and Tempza).
Tash returns for their first NZ festival performance since Bay Dreams 2018 with over a billion streams under their belt, and a fresh album TERRA FIRMA, which debuted at #1 upon its release this year. The album features the single ‘Pretty Lady’, which has gone gold.
Tash can’t wait to head over this summer, commenting, “I’m finally returning to my second home across the sea. It’s been almost two years since I’ve been on stage in New Zealand and this time I’ll be back bringing an entirely new show to Bay Dreams. I can’t wait to show you what I’ve got planned for you all.”
Tash Sultana, the creative genius and gender-fluid multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer and engineer, began with humble beginnings busking on the streets of Melbourne to a sold-out world tour in 2017 and an ARIA-winning #2 debut album FLOW STATE.
Representing the stage for indie pop is singer, songwriter, record producer and record breaking sensation Tones and I, who has garnered nearly 3 billion streams.
Tones and I sent a warm shoutout to festival-goers, “Kia ora New Zealand! I am bloody coming back! I can't wait to see you all at Bay Dreams! Bay Dreams was my first overseas festival and it will also be my second too! Love you all, see ya soon legends” she said.
Tones released her breakout single, 14x platinum ‘Dance Monkey’ in May 2019, which reached number one in over 30 countries. Breaking the Australian record for the most weeks (24) at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart by any artist, and going on to win four out of eight nominations at the ARIA music awards 2019.
Bay Dreams 2022 has a distinctly drum and bass flavour this year, with Belgian talent Netsky set to electrify audiences with his viral tunes and instrumental layering. Netsky returns to NZ after blowing out two Spark Arena shows earlier this year. His latest album ‘Second Nature’ which features the single ‘I See The Future in Your Eyes’, branches out from his typical style, incorporating elements of other genres including hip-hop, hardstyle and disco, with nods to soul in some songs but remains drum and bass at heart.
Returning for the first time in 3 years is electronic duo Chase & Status from the UK, composed of Saul Milton (Chase) and Will Kennard (Status). They return to the Drum & Bass Stage with their famous DJ set alongside their long-time MC, Rage. Their exciting project RTRN II JUNGLE celebrated 15 years of Chase & Status and returned to their roots of Jamaican inspired beats and music culture. The duo have released five studio albums as well as collaborating with major artists such as Plan B, CeeLo Green, Rihanna, Example, and Tinie Tempah.
Hybrid Minds will continue the drum and bass vibes, bringing their live Outline show to NZ for the very first time, featuring legendary vocalist Charlotte Haining and MC Tempza on stage along with their “Outline” branded production.
The Brighton-born Elevate and Shogun kingpin Friction makes his way back to the festival stage to blow audiences away with his technical ability. Fans will also be treated to a nostalgic taste of Daft Punk with the most realistic tribute in the world, Discovery, who makes its way from Australia to present Daft Punk’s undeniable catalogue of hits that shaped dance music.
Another standout act to grace the stage is Sydney based drill rap group ONEFOUR, who are considered pioneers of drill rap in Australia, with their 2019 singles 'The Message' and 'Spot the Difference' catching the attention of rap fans internationally. The group's debut album 'Against All Odds', was released in 2020 and went to #8 on the ARIA charts. ONEFOUR will showcase their talent in their first major NZ performance at Bay Dreams 2022.
Joining the hip-hop scene is Masked Wolf, who is notably burning up the charts and streams at the moment. Masked Wolf will make his debut in NZ after breaking records with ‘Astronaut In The Ocean’, the fastest growing hip-hop record of 2021.
Holy Goof, Rene LaVice, V O E and Party Thieves will bring international bass, house and party elements to the infamous ‘Bass Stages’.
Other internationals include Australian singer, songwriter Jack River and trap queen Tori Levett.
Tom Scott's Avantdale Bowling Club will showcase local hip-hop jazz talent, and successful NZ rap duo Church & AP are set to bring the hook-heavy hits. Joining them is
Lilbubblegum, the kiwi-born, LA-based rapper who is exploding onto the scene in the US.
The local line up includes multi-platinum selling revered rock act Blindspott, who thrilled kiwi fans when they reunited in 2019, and will make their first Bay Dreams appearance in 2022.
They will be joined by other must-see acts local artists Sons of Zion, Lance Savali, Muroki, KÉDU CARLÖ, Masaya, Poetik, Waja B2B Bloom, Brydie Tong, Jess Rhodes, Kaylee Bell, Ponz, Nakita, and Who Shot Scott.
A second line-up announcement is due in coming weeks.
