Album Review: Big Sean - Detroit 2
Big Sean has pulled out all the stops for his Detroit Sequel album “Detroit 2” that has been executively produced by Kayne West and Hit-Boy. Big Sean has also recently announced that he is starting his own record label after his release of “Detroit 2”.
Big Sean opens the album with “Why Would I Stop” in which Big Sean attacks with full steam ahead to open his project which matches the theme of the song. “Lucky Me” follows where Big Sean slows the pace down slightly for the opening of the song but introduces us with a transition on production halfway through which starts to become a common occurrence on projects where Big Sean gets technical with us and shows us a bit more of the behind the scenes of his past.
Wolves are one of the standout tracks where you view the tracklist before tuning in with Post Malone featuring on the track. Although this song doesn’t quite go as you would assume with Big Sean still taking the reins over the chorus with him singing a melodic hook. It does seem odd to not see Post Malone belting the hook as he is one of the top artists in the World right now whether you like it or not and he can carry a hook with the best in the game. Overall still a good song but chances have been missed.
The next few following tracks blend a bit too much into each other and didn’t carry the same weight as the opening section of the project but “Guard your Heart” really kicks the project back into life with Anderson.Paak gliding over the light taps of the piano. The production on this track is so well crafted, Big Sean doesn’t overdo it but shows us just enough vulnerability to keep the audience involved with him. Personally, this was one of the standout tracks along with strong features from Early Mac and Wale.
Big Sean has definitely attacked this project with the intentions of getting the credit he feels he deserves from the game, not every track hit perfectly but Big Sean has definitely proved he is not going to disappear anytime soon.
