Album Review: Nav - Good Intentions
Canadian Rapper Nav has released his new jam-packed 18 track album “Good Intentions”. Nav has released this album under executive production from The Weeknd under their label “XO” and this project has some huge features behind it from the likes of Travis Scott, Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert and more.
Nav does have the tendency to come across as quite repetitive with his milestone voice and flow that has got him to where he is today. Although on “Good Intentions” you can tell Nav has found his confidence despite some of the criticism and memes that do get made out of him online. Nav has definitely expanded a lot more than in the past and has made the effort to step out of his box a bit more. With tracks such as “Brown Boy”, you can tell Nav is carrying newfound confidence in himself and that he is starting not to care about what people think, this track is definitely one of the best releases on the album.
His confidence can also be shown on tracks such as “Status” with Lil Uzi and “Recap” with Don Toliver, where Nav stands out on both songs and completely runs the show despite the hot streak that both of those artists are on at the moment. “Good Intentions” has showcased this new side of Nav and it is shown that despite everything he will continue to grow bigger and bigger. Nav does have a tendency to be overshadowed by features on this own tracks at times but this doesn’t prove to be the case on this project
A highlight of “Good Intentions” is the track “Run It Up” with Pop Smoke. This is one of Pop Smoke's first posthumous verses to drop and this song does not disappoint. On this track, Nav really goes in and straight spits with a bundle of energy behind him which is definitely a switch up from his usual slow and melodic verses. Pop Smoke even delivers a more melodic version of himself that we haven’t really been introduced to by him and it is the perfect fit for this track. These two combining on a track is bittersweet as we may not get to see these two on a song again, this unlikely combination of artists has definitely made one of the highlights of this project.
“Good Intentions” wasn’t a completely outstanding album, but it has set the new benchmark for Nav and has expressed what he is capable of being able to do in the scene. This album is an example of what a change in confidence and self stature can do to your craft and it definitely has made a world of difference for Nav, it will only be a matter of time till Nav starts to gain the recognition that he truly deserves.
