The Legacy Of Nipsey Hussle
On March 31st, 2019 the Hip Hop and Music Industry lost a huge star in Ermias Joseph Asghedom or commonly known as Nipsey Hussle. Nipsey Hussle was shot countless times outside the store he owned “Marathon Clothing” in South Los Angeles. A year later we take a look back at his career at the legacy he has left us today.
Nipsey really began his music career in 2005 when he released his first mixtape “Slauson Boy Volume 1” which would gain traction in Nipsey’s Local Scene while also being apart of a subgroup from the Crips. Nipsey really found attention outside of his local area with his mixtape “Bullets Ain’t Got No Name” which would lead to Nipsey collaborating on songs with the likes of Drake, Snoop Dogg, and Lloyd to name a few. All of these projects would lead to Nipsey releasing his debut album in 2018 called “Victory Lap” which debuted at Number 4 on the Billboard 200.
Nipsey Hussle was not just a rap artist, Nipsey was a massive entrepreneur and activist which lead to him inspiring many people around his community and city to go out and chase their dreams regardless of their background or upbringing. Nipsey’s first real business moves came in 2010 when Nipsey left his label at the time to start his own record label called ‘All Money In.’ Nipsey definitely took a unique approach to marketing and selling off his records where he would create a buzz around his music and build hype to go on to create 1000 hard copies of his projects and he would sell them at $100 each, he would sell all of these successfully and within hours. Nipsey would take his entrepreneurial skills to then start his own technology hub and clothing brand while still finding success in his music career.
Nipsey’s death was another big hit to the music industry, Nipsey was a very selfless person and always gave time to the people around him in Los Angeles and not only did he inspire many young creatives but he inspired so many other people in the music industry including the likes of Roddy Rich who admires Nipsey Hussle and his character. Nipsey Hussle's song with Roddy Rich ‘Feed The Streets’ helped Rich start gaining the attention that he deserved in the music industry.
As we come into a year after Nipsey’s passing his name and his legacy has not been forgotten at all, Artists such as YG have dropped projects such as ‘4REAL 4REAL’ that were dedicated to Nipsey. If Nipsey left one thing for the world it is that anyone can live the "American Dream" regardless of your background, upbringing or ethnicity. Nipsey’s legacy will be carried through the industry for years to come.
“Instead of trying to build a brick wall, lay a brick every day. Eventually, you’ll look up and you’ll have a brick wall.” Nipsey Hussle
