YG Opens Up About Nipsey Hussle's Death
YG, like many others in the hip-hop community, was deeply impacted by the death of his good friend and collaborator Nipsey Hussle, and shared a heartfelt message shortly after his death. "I took so long to post you kuz I kant believe this shit," he wrote. "I don't wanna believe this shit. I'm not never accepting it. IDGAF what nobody say. It wasn't yo time to go." In a new interview with Big Boy on Real 92.3, YG spoke about their relationship and what it felt like to lose him.
"I met bruh at the studio in 2010, he was fresh outta jail," he explained at the ten minute mark of the video above. "We made some music same day, and after that we kept running across each other just on some L.A. shit." He continued, "He ended up being a big brother to me." The two rappers found a lot of common ground, and it eventually grew into a fruitful working relationship as well as a strong friendship.
"I was so confused, my album was supposed to be a surprise album," he said of the delay he imposed on his album after learning of Nip's death. "When the shit happened with the homie, I'm like, 'Damn, I can't album out, I can't be promoting this shit.'" The tribute to Nip on 4REAL 4REAL is there because he wanted to give a percentage of the earnings to his children, he added.
At the 16:30 mark of the interview, Big Boy asked where he was and how he felt when he heard the news. "I was at [DJ] Mustard's house, we was watching the Duke vs. Michigan game, and I was texting Todd Gurley," he said. A close friend of YG's, who worked at the Marathon clothing store in L.A., informed him that Nip got shot, and at first he didn't believe it.
"I just got up and left," he said. "They gave us the location of where they were taking bro [...] We were like 15-20 minutes away, and they were like, 'Homie ain't making it.'" Clearly emotional recounting the day, he added, "That shit ain't right. Homie supposed to be here. I got a big question mark on my life right now. [...] How do God take somebody like that, we need him. I just don't get it, I'm not accepting it."
During his time on the show, he also addressed his recent comments regarding 4REAL 4REAL. "After this album drop May 24th, I got 1 more album left," he tweeted, with many jumping to the conclusion that he's was ready to retire soon. However, he told Big Boy that it's about his record deal, a contract he will fulfill when he releases the follow-up to 4REAL.
